New Year's Resolutions - to be or not to be?

This is the time of year when it's often assumed 'everyone' will be making New Year's resolutions. In the conversations I've been part of - or overheard - almost everyone has said they don't make New Year's resolutions.

 

For some people it's because they are committed on an ongoing basis to the things that tend to come up as resolutions, e.g. health, fitness, or personal development. For others, they believe it will fall by the wayside within a few weeks, or it's just too challenging at that time of year. Recent research showed that 91% of resolutions have 'failed' by the end of January.

 

I could give you a longer list of the possible reasons why, but instead I thought I'd share a few tips to help you to be successful, whatever time of year you may be focusing on your goals:

 

1. Get really clear on the outcome you want. Put attention and energy into what you want to have happen. Ask yourself what's important to you about that, and what the impact on your life will be when you've achieved it.

 

2. Start where you are. It may sound obvious, but consciously acknowledging and accepting what your starting point is really helps you to be realistic. 

 

3. Identify small steps to get you started and build momentum. This makes the bigger goal feel more achievable and manageable, and you can celebrate progress along the way to encourage you to keep going.

 

4. Notice that you're already doing better than you think. Appreciate what's going well for you, your skills and capabilities, and be grateful for the range of choices and opportunities which are available to help you on your way. Believe me, you always have choices, even if it may not seem obvious or easy!

 

5. Get the right support. You may benefit from professional support from someone who has a track record of success, e.g. a coach, mentor, or personal trainer. Remember your past achievements, how you felt, and what helped you to be successful. Speak to someone who's already achieved something similar. And of course it always helps to get moral support from friends and family!

 

6. Simplify. You don't have to have a long, elaborate list of things you think you 'should' be achieving. It can be simply about taking more time to relax, practising gratitude or mindfulness, or getting more rest. You know better than anyone else what - and when! - feels appropriate for you.
