Jikiden Reiki - some light on the subject!

I've written this post to build more understanding of the full range of support that I offer to clients, and how Reiki fits alongside other work. I'll do this by sharing my Reiki experiences and some client feedback. I have found there are many myths and misunderstandings, so this is me offering my take on it! I originally learned Reiki to support my husband and parents with health issues, and I can't put into words how amazing it has been to be able to give them some relief and boost their energy! Being able to offer such benefits to clients is the icing on the cake.

What is Jikiden Reiki?

Reiki is a natural hand-healing method, with the practitioner accessing source energy (or universal energy) and passing it to the receiver through the hands. It is said to encourage well-being and promote the body and mind's own natural healing abilities. It is a popular therapy for pain, inflammation, stress, and many other conditions including chronic and long-term illnesses. It was originated in Japan around 100 years ago by Dr Mikao Usui. Most commonly known is Western Reiki which spread from Japan to Hawaii to the USA as it became popular. Jikiden Reiki follows simple and clear principles, which practitioners must sign up to and demonstrate before they are qualified. I find Jikiden - meaning 'directly transmitted' - a very accessible form as there are no complicated processes to learn. Basically there is nothing added, and nothing taken away from the original method as it was taught in the 1920s.

My fantastic teacher, Gisela Stewart founded Simply Jikiden Reiki, which is an official branch of the Jikiden Reiki insititute in Scotland, and I chose to learn with her because she maintains integrity, simplicity, and respect for the whole process, the founders, and original principles. I really felt like a confident and able practitioner as I left my training, and she has been there for support with any questions or advice since. I highly recommend her as a teacher.

What can clients expect? How does it work?

As the hands are laid on (or above) each area of the body, usually starting with the head, you may feel some heat, tingling, or in some cases a throbbing. It's not a lasting sensation, it's just a sign of the energy flowing through to clear toxins. Gradually the sensations fade and the practitioner moves to work on the next area of the body.

Most of the treatment is very quiet and peaceful - you may drift off or even fall asleep as you go into a state of deep relaxation. Some people report that they are able to make sense of things which have been bothering them, and that a resolution can seem to gently settle into place as the treatment progresses (or shortly afterwards). In the last few minutes of the session, there is a 'Kekko' massage with refreshing brushing movements and patting on the back and legs, to release any toxins which have shifted as a result of the treatment.

For those who are skeptical and think Reiki is a bit 'alternative' or just relies on a placebo effect, I would suggest listening to the benefits directly from clients who have experienced it. And it's not for everyone, which is abolutely fine. It's also not a miracle cure, and the advice of a medical professional should always be sought, where appropriate.

Why do I include Reiki in my professional practice?

I always take time with clients to establish where they are now, how they are feeling, and what they want to get out of our time together. I then tailor the approach to meet their needs, which often includes coaching too. Reiki can be especially helpful when someone is feeling really 'stuck' or emotional, and they just feel like being soothed and relaxed for a while. Reiki doesn't require anything from the client, other than to lie down (or sit) and relax, fully clothed, in a warm and peaceful environment.

I strongly believe in the connection between body and mind, and the subconscious can work in wonderful ways to help the healing process. I have found Reiki to be very effective for soothing pain, inflammation, injuries, and other physical complaints. And it works brilliantly alongside coaching, as people get a deep holistic effect from the different methods.

What do clients say after receiving Reiki?

Many of my clients have told me they feel 'lighter' (almost everyone uses this exact word!), and look slightly puzzled because they don't quite know why. It is also common for a natural 'letting go' of emotions after the session, for example one lady slept well then woke early the next morning, crying, and felt much better after the release of emotion. Another client let the floodgates open as she got into her car and said it was "good crying!", and that she was able to let in lot of positive thoughts and emotions afterwards.

Case study 1: Susan, early 50s, rheumatoid arthritis

At the start...

Susan reported chronic and debilitating pain and inflammation from her condition. Her mental well-being was affected by the strain of the physical effects, and also due to long-term issues with stress. She was on heavy medication and her use of strong painkillers was becoming more frequent. The arthritis affected her whole body, especially the joints, and she was having great difficulty getting through the working week.

Her treatments

Susan started by having three treatments close together, and has done the same for occasional flare-ups since. For a period of a few months, Susan has found it useful to have one or two shorter treatments most weeks. While it is unusual for clients to invest in such regular treatments, it has proved to have a high impact in this case and Susan feels it was really worthwhile. She commented recently that her quality of life has improved dramatically beyond what she ever expected, and she has been out having fun with her friends for the first time in a couple of years. The reduction in pain and swelling has been dramatic, to virtually nothing.

Susan reports that she is now (as at November 2015) virtually symptom-free, only noticing some fatigue now and again. Her Reiki treatments have reduced to every couple of weeks, and most of these are carried out using a distance healing method.

Case study 2: Daniel, late 60s, epilepsy and depression

At the start...

Daniel suffered regular episodes of eplilepsy followed by deep depression. This took over his life every few weeks, for 10-14 days at a time. He had chronic headaches immediately afterwards followed by several "black days" of depression and confusion.

His treatments

The first time I saw Daniel I gave 3 treatments in the first 5 days following a severe episode. From the very first time, he said the depression didn't set in as badly as it had done before (and in fact it hasn't relapsed since, over 4 or 5 bouts). He also noticed relief from the headaches and migraines which are present in the first few days, and this continues to be effective for him. He was quite emotional when he told me what a difference regular Reiki treatments have made to his life!

Daniel's feedback:

“I am epileptic, having suffered from regular attacks for many years. To some extent the worst aspect of this is the apparently inevitable period of depression which follows each episode, this depression lasting, in some instances, for anything up to two weeks. Having had no relief from conventional medical sources I sought help from Anna and have found, from the benefit of her Reiki, that she has been able to provide me with a great deal of worthwhile support, both in terms of shortening these periods of depression and in reducing the strength of their attacks.

While the epileptic attacks are currently part and parcel of my life I now see Anna as an essential "cushion" or "buffer" to help me cope with what I regard as the worst elements of it. The treatment I receive from her gives me an instant lift and a longer-term benefit, and I even dare to harbour the hope that her expertise may provide me in due course with a more lasting legacy.”

All of the above information is based on my own experiences since I began learning about Reiki, and at the present time there is limited scientific research to back up these examples in a more empirical way.

Reiki is not a subsitute for medical intervention - although it is highly complementary. The advice of a medical professional should always be sought where needed.
